Hi,
We are struggling to find someone who can retrieve data off our broken hard drive - in Shanghai. It is very frustrating as authorised apple repairer don't do it. Any suggestions?
Thanks

http://www.myung.cn/ try that one. They are in Pudong close to the NextAge Department Store. I've had 3 bad HD's in the last 4 years and they got the data out

as I said, it is worth a try to start your book from another system (either the original Apple DVD that came with it, or Ubuntu Linux, or ....), or maybe from another macbook and using the macbook with the broken harddrive in the FireWire Target Mode. All this in order to be able to access the broken harddisk from another disk and transfer as much data as possible to another support (external harddrive, USB stick, other computer....)

or, other alternative, get the broken disk out into an external harddrive case and attach it via USB to another computer to do the same...

but it depends on the failure, if the head is damaged, than you can not read/write anything...

My drive broke a couple of years ago. I couldn't save the drive, but I did save most of my files, thanks to Data Rescue II by Prosoft

Thanks for your comments. Not really sure what 'broken' means myself. All I know is that the data could not be retrieved from geeksqaud at Xuijihui. The authorized Apple repairer will give us a new hard drive but not give us the old one (apple policy). So, we need to get the data off it before it gets fixed. It went back to Aus and they said the same thing - will replace the hard drive but won't give us the old one - frustrating when you need the information on the computer.

Hi there,

when you mean "broken" harddrive, what exactly you mean? depending on what is broken, only the "pros" can help you, like ontrack etc. Those people have special (and very, very expensive) equipment and they are mostly dealing with special cases (fire, water damage etc)... for a private person or small buisnesses this service will be very expesinve too...

If now only the filesystem is damaged then maybe you can help yourself either with booting from the original apple system DVD, or with Linux boot disk and transfer whatever possible data to another external disk...

did you have a headcrash?

Anyway, maybe try to electronic market in Xujiahui (metro line 1)...

Good luck
